Was it worth it? Answer.... no

First let me say I'm not joking when I say I'd love to reply to your posts, but I am seemingly unable to reply only edit the original post, does anybody have any suggestions, I'm using Vista lol and firefox. Is my brower missing the reply functionality?

I purchased an OEM copy of Vista, when I was given the dilemma by Microsoft of either purchasing a OEM XP License for about $10 less than getting an OEM copy of Vista via newegg.

What I can tell you is that I have been a computer user since the 80's and have a history of OS usage, dating back to whatever they called the OS on the Apple IIGS, DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1, Win 95/98/98SE/2000/XP and of course OEM VISTA ULTIMATE 64 bit.

I have finally settled down with Vista, but I am left looking for the new and improved features which really give me the feeling that they are all that (sorta) without the bag of chips.

I don't understand why Vista wasn't packaged as saleable service pack to XP because Vista truly offers an almost immeasurable benefit per dollar over XP.

One of the major downsides of Vista, is the necessity to upgrade hardware on older rigs to achieve performance standards easily obtainable with 2 or 3 or 4 year old hardware on XP. Also, with only 2GB of ram in the sytem, it is smooth, but it would be equally smooth with XP, so while there is intelligent (supposedly) buffering of the RAM by Vista, perhaps reducing the load time on programs you use consistently at certain times of the day, in Vista over XP I don't see that it is a major advantage over XP. I use XP at work daily, Windows 2000 weekly, and Vista at home.

At this point I am pretty comfy with Vista, I have totally disabled the UAC, and I am left to wonder if I am really safer with Vista vs XP. I did have a virus or nasty bit of malware at one time, with Vista, which I was able to safely dispose of using System Restore. On my old single core rig, System Restore no longer works for unknown reasoning, also I cannot reformat the drive, and install a clean OS, because I no longer have the activation code which I'll have to call up Dell TSupport and spend more hours of my life than it is worth to deal with that, while having a protected computer readily available should there be a problem.

However, with Vista Ultimate, no update to the speech recognition system, no word processor which interfaces with the speech recognition, and no real surviving feature that I get excited by.

At this point I would have preferred to get OEM XP and a cheap or bootleg copy of Office, just for the fact that I have spell check and compatibility with work computers, Excel files.

There are a few visual things but nothing to justify 5 years of development, nothing to justify the price, and certainly nothing to want me to invest any money in upcoming Windows 7 or go Microsoft in the future. Unfortunately they have damaged their company image, going from the evil almost monopoly to the exploiter of that power to release drab OS software that lacks completeness and robustness.

There is nothing that truly bothers me about Vista Ultimate, if you forget about, No MS WORD, No OS integrated Microsoft Virus Protection, and lack of incompatibility of the Vista Speech Recognition Engine with Open Office.

I believe that Vista, really does deserve the half assed product award. At this point.

How does one make a reply in ones' own post? JU must have changed since I was last here since I can no longer reply to users in the forum which is kinda stupid in my opinion.

Here's a dumb question, how do so many people who don't HAVE Vista installed know they 'don't like it?'

Not dumb at all, this question has often crossed my mind too.
I guess some people rely on heresay and other people's points of view and aren't bothered about actually finding out for themselves.

I've had Vista installed. More than once. I still don't like it.

We know that already

Why not change the Apprentice tag to I hate Vista. Might as well get it over with sooner or later....

Mhmm...or he could just admit the *real* reason he doesn't like it (like he did on IRC).

I do have to agree with the author of this thread. Bill gates told us XP was not capable of Vista glass effect. XP is and does give a comparable effect. I have just completed an exercise where I put Vista transformation pack 8 on and True transparency, Winflip and Deskspace. You can more or less say it is Vista running through XP and I did not have to buy a new computer to get it either so having had and used Vista I can say without doubt that Vista could have been made as an add on for XP. And I agree that after all the promo work etc to launch Vista as a half finished product full of bugs and price it at the level it is it fully deserves the half assed tag. I won't be buying it. I am looking at Macintosh as my next computer. To hell with Microsoft. To those who like Vista....I am glad it works for you. I used ME with no problems when everyone was whinging about that....so it is kinda like swings and roundabouts.

Most people can't say squat without any doubt.  And if you can . . you don't know what you are talking about.  Vista is more than just a new GUI.  The biggest problem with Vista in my opinion (yes, just one opinion) is that it is too backwards compatible.

Everyone should use the OS that fits their needs.

Needs:
  • Runs the applications I want
  • Costs what I want to pay
  • Has the security I want
  • Looks like I want
Somewhere in that matrix is the OS you will use.

The thing is, there doesn't have to be an OS war.  The "war" is about the people trying to push what fulfills their wants and needs on other people that have other wants and needs.  If the focus were changed to actually defining waht others needs are and becoming well enough informed to assist in picking the right OS we'd all be better off.

If you are looking for a beautiful UI with matching hardware and software, have money falling out your ass, and only use 10 apps and want to be safer than the guy next to you . . go with the Mac.

If you are a cheap bastage who has lots of time to find and install and configure your OS and apps every two months and want to be cooler than the guy next to you . . . go with *nix.

Everyone else . . . . run a version of Windows.  If you have a little more money than the guy next to you . . go with Vista and have a whatever Vista brings.  You other guys . . XP is fine.

+1..............and Mountainhawk makes a very worthy observation here in that many Microsoft users, me included, are 'eyeing' up a Mac purely because of the disappointment from Vista. And I'm one that tried it on a power system built for Vista and found it to be so slow compared with XP. I also agree with Astyanax0 point about ram on XP. I, too, have had the same experience and seen it on several other systems where 512Mb of ram and a dedicated graphics card is no longer enough for XP when multi-tasking. You really need a gig of ram. One of my XP machines simply flies with a gig of ram and a very meagre FX5500. And it knocks spots off the old Vista power setup when it comes to speed and responsiveness.

You thought that was the real reason? It was not...

It goes much deeper. It starts with a bloated OS. It ends with MS controlling you.

Funny how many people don't see it that way.

And by the way guess what? I'm not alone...

Others dislike Vista...

Don't make me bust out the logs kona...I will. You hate it so much because your dinosaur machine can't run it and you can't afford to upgrade it. How is MS controlling any of us? Really need to quit it with all these conspiracy theories. Others may dislike Vista...but not at the magnitude that you would like to make it out to be.

Bring it. All it will show is me saying what you wanted to hear.

You hate it so much because your dinosaur machine can't run it and you can't afford to upgrade it.

My machine isn't a dinosaur. You just think it is. I do have the money to upgrade it but why should I? Just to give MS a sale? I don't think so...

How is MS controlling any of us?

You're obviously unaware of how many times Vista calls home in a given day...

Others may dislike Vista...but not at the magnitude that you would like to make it out to be.

No they dislike Vista at the same level. Some people I know dislike Vista worse. I had a customer ask me today what PC to buy that didn't have Vista. I ask around all the time. Around here Vista is disliked...

You were the one who said it...gonna say I was controlling you now?

Again...that isn't what you had said. All you could afford was a $40 motherboard to go with the CPU and RAM you already have.
No they dislike Vista at the same level. Some people I know dislike Vista worse. I had a customer ask me today what PC to buy that didn't have Vista. I ask around all the time. Around here Vista is disliked...
You work at Wal-Mart, right? It's not like people who go into Wallyworld to get a computer actually have a clue to begin with, so that hardly counts for anything. At any rate, it's obviously an exercise in futility to attempt a reasonable debate/conversation with you since you've already made up your mind and will not listen to reason in any way, shape, or form, and when you get cornered you toss out insults like a child on the playground. *out*
